Look! Ice cream.

Witness the evils of dehumanising corporate culture at work, here in Borders on Oxford Street. I'm not sure if anti-capitalists hate Borders or not. It's very 'twee' in the same way as Starbucks, but it sells books and I can't imagine devout revolutionaries burning books (except for the ones they don't like).

Although it looks quite dull, this was something of a technical feat - the Smena is sitting on a tripod and taking a second-long exposure. Generally, people overestimate the amount of light in interior scenes - artificial light is much, much dimmer than sunlight, and shutter speeds which are quick enough so that the picture isn't blurry tend to underexposure, making the room look dismal and depressing. If you've ever taken a picture in your living room, even with a flash, you'll notice that it looks much dingier than it should do. In general it's better to have too much light than too little. And remember - the sun is God. Turner said that, and he knew a thing or two.
The black and white pictures on these pages were taken with the camera held in my hand, but the film I used was 'fast'. If you imagine film as being a sponge that soaks up light, 'fast' film is more absorbent, and pictures can be taken in low-light conditions OR with very quick shutter speeds, thus capturing fast action. The downside is that 'fast' film produces grainy images which look as if they have been printed in a newspaper.
